How to fix shrinking or overlapping silicone caulk
Silicone and hybrid sealants can visibly shrink as they cure, leaving gaps or exposing grout lines underneath. While applying a fresh second layer or a new bead over existing caulk is a common temptation, fresh silicone rarely adheres well to cured silicone, often leading to peeling and leaks.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Applying a new bead of silicone over the existing one
- 2Attempting to remove old caulk with a utility knife
- 3Applying caulk directly over existing cracks
