How do you build a fence on an incline?
You must decide whether you can adjust the individual slats on a premade panel or if you need to install them one by one. The slope also complicates surrounding landscaping, leaving you to figure out how much gravel backfill keeps a retaining wall solid, where perforated drain pipes should exit, and how to slope layered materials away from the wall.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Using premade panels and racking them to keep things vertical on an angle
- 2Installing slats one by one
- 3Stepping up the fence sections by level or following the slope continuously
- 4installing a drain behind the wall and daylighting the pipe out the sides
- 5using a French drain

“I’ve never put up a fence but need to put one between my house and the neighbors(the fence that runs parallel to the street). There’s a small incline and I’m curious if I can use a premade panel and adjust the individual slates a little bit or if I need to install slats one by one.”source ↗
“how do i make sure the retaining wall stays solid? How much back fill with gravel. Do i need a perforated drain pipe at the base? If yes where do the ends exit?”source ↗
“For the sitting area itself...layering of materials? tamped gravel then fabric then small river rocks? do i need to slope it away from the wall?”source ↗
