Jeep stuck in park won't turn off

Vehicles falsely detect that they are not in park even when the shifter is physically in position, locking the shifter and refusing to let the ignition turn off. This traps drivers with electronics stuck on and drains the battery while they try to find a workaround.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    holding the Start/Stop button down
  2. 2
pressing the brake and moving the shifter
  3. 3
pulling the electric parking brake switch up
  4. 4
pulling the negative terminal off the battery under the hood to kill electronics
  5. 5
adding a resistor on the wire that runs from the ignition switch to the relay
  6. 6
using a kill switch to turn off the relay

“Before connecting the generator everything was ok. I switched the key off, the relay turned off and the ignition coil was cut off, but with the generator hooked up and the engine on just enough power runs through charging ignition light to power the relay.”source ↗

“can turn the relay off with a 0 kill switch, but I'd like to use the key.”source ↗
