Is it normal for coolant to be above MAX when warm?

Coolant naturally expands with heat after driving, raising the fluid level in the expansion tank above the MAX line. Because it is hard to tell whether a high fluid level is normal thermal expansion or an actual problem while warm, the true level must be checked when the engine is cold the next morning.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Checking the fluid level again when the engine is completely cold the next morning
  2. 2
Using a turkey baster to remove excess coolant from the expansion tank
  3. 3
Allowing the system to bleed air as the reservoir level drops
  4. 4
Inspecting the coolant level when the engine is cold or has sat overnight
  5. 5
Checking if the reservoir can be shifted to a level position by hand

“It’s fine especially if you said you driven it for 15 minutes coolant expands with heat and it’s the overflow tank.”source ↗

“That's normal, the coolant expands and that's why max is always way below the Cap, otherwise it would spill.”source ↗
