How to clean a heavily soiled oven without ruining the enamel

Heavy grease and baked-on grime require strong cleaners, but harsh chemicals can strip the enamel coating right off the interior surfaces. This leaves the oven permanently damaged and prevents safe use.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using a handheld steam cleaning appliance
  2. 2
Using chemical oven cleaning kits and bags such as Oven Pride or Easy Off
  3. 3
    Hiring a professional cleaning service
  4. 4
Soaking racks in hot water and dish soap or using dishwasher pods in the bathtub
  5. 5
Using all-natural solutions like baking soda, vinegar, or pumice stones
  6. 6
Using razor blade scrapers to remove baked-on char
  7. 7
Buying oven cleaner, sponges, and gloves to scrub it manually
  8. 8
Soaking oven grates in a bathtub with hot water and dishwasher detergent pods
  9. 9
    Using baking soda and vinegar
  10. 10
Cleaning components like reflector plates and wire racks
  11. 11
Baking fragrant items like cake to mask the odor
  12. 12
Using EasyOff spray with a steel scrub
  13. 13
Covering cleaner-soaked surfaces with garbage bags overnight to increase dwell time
  14. 14
Using a razor blade scraper for glass
  15. 15
Bar Keepers Friend with a damp paper towel and elbow grease
  16. 16
Oven cleaner left to sit for a period of time, preferably overnight
  17. 17
Dawn dish soap and a razor blade used carefully
  18. 18
Using Easy-Off oven cleaner and manual scrubbing
  19. 19
Coating in strong degreaser overnight followed by using a scraper
  20. 20
Applying a scrubbing or polishing paste with a rough sponge
