Why do coworkers snitch to management over petty things?

Colleagues will report tiny infractions to administration, like using the wrong colored pass, or eavesdrop on private phone calls to reveal personal medical information to the boss. This catty behavior destroys trust, leaving employees hating their coworkers and refusing to befriend anyone they work with.

“A couple weeks ago, my principal called me into the office, closed the door, and said verbatim “ let’s just cut to the chase. I know you’re pregnant. I wish you would’ve told me.” She said she found out because another teacher overheard me on the phone making a dr appointment.”source ↗

“Why do teachers snitch on each other? Over stupid stuff too. I happened to have a pass that is a different color than the rest of the building. A teacher emailed two admin and their assistants after confiscating it.”source ↗
