Why is my AC air handler wet and smelly?

Old HVAC systems accumulate dust and organic growth that trap moisture inside the air handler, causing heavy condensation and persistent foul odors. Resolving this deep-seated contamination in aging units often requires replacing the plenum box or the entire system.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Removing the screws on the triangle between the two coils to expose the inside and clean it manually using coil cleaner
  2. 2
Adding a scent puck near the coil to help cover up the smell
  3. 3
Installing a UV light in the plenum to kill growth
  4. 4
    Using an ozone generator
  5. 5
Replacing the plenum boxes along with the AC system
  6. 6
Having the AC unit professionally serviced and repaired
  7. 7
    Fixing holes in attic ducts
  8. 8
Clearing out primary drain pipe clogs
  9. 9
Installing a UV light in the HVAC system
  10. 10
Checking indoor coils for condensation and mold
  11. 11
    Scoping vents for dead animals
  12. 12
put that filter in a bag and took it to the office
  13. 13
Wipe down the filter rack with a wet towel, dry it thoroughly and toss in a new filter
  14. 14
Get a real filter , check the condensate drain / trap i could be not draining

So i was looking in my hvac system, its 30 years old, all original as far as I know, and saw this. Dust, growth (mold) some combo of both? I already was planning on replacing the hvac system this fall anyway, im assuming have them replace this plenum box area as well?source ↗

In the maintenance request I called it a mold growth but the apartment maintenance men tell me it’s just wet and it didn’t have time to grow mold.source ↗
