Why does my anxious cat scream and panic over closed doors?

Cats experience intense anxiety that causes them to run, scream, or bite when predictable environments change. This stress locks them into rigid fixation loops where they repeatedly demand access to a specific closed door even when alternative open pathways are right beside them.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Sitting with the cat to help them through the anxiety episode
  2. 2
Physically walking the cat through the alternative room and door
  3. 3
Calling out to the cat from the alternative route
  4. 4
Waiting for the cat to figure it out
  5. 5
Waiting for the cat to forgive you over time
  6. 6
    Using positive reinforcement
  7. 7
Locking the cat out of or into the bedroom
  8. 8
Completely ignoring the meowing with 100% consistency
  9. 9
    Using pheromone diffusers for anxiety
  10. 10
Checking if the cat is meowing for attention or due to environmental changes
  11. 11
    Breaking up fights manually
  12. 12
Using a squirt bottle of water to break up physical fights
  13. 13
watching for body language cues that indicate when to stop petting
  14. 14
putting the treat on a tissue and walking far away so the cat will eat it
  15. 15
Watching the cat's behavior for signs of drinking water or aggression
  16. 16
Checking if the cat ate something toxic, bitter, or a toad
  17. 17
Trying to take the cat to a vet
  18. 18
bringing the cat home to fix its hair
  19. 19
leaving the cat with the groomer and taking breaks

Trying to avoid dogs on the trail
  22. 22
Picking up the cat and moving aside when a dog appears

Attempting to introduce the cat to specific neighbor dogs to show they are safe
  25. 25
Relying on pre-procedure blood tests and health checkups
  26. 26
    Trusting the veterinary process
  27. 27
Seeking reassurance and positive experiences from other pet owners
  28. 28
Giving the cat time to adjust to the new environment.

I'm worried it's rabies because while she's mostly around the house, she's still a stray and I've no idea where she's been, and also she doesn't allow anyone to touch her essentially, so I haven't noticed any injuries.source ↗

It's currently midnight in Malaysia and I'm very worried, parents don't allow pets indoor, there's not a way for me to separate them.source ↗

I will say, the kitten was the same all day, active as ever, I wouldn't have noticed the foam at all if she hadn't climbed the crate. I recently saw reels on rabies, so maybe I'm paranoid? I'm hoping it's just paranoia.source ↗

She will go up to where it was and keep meowing to "open" the door even if the other door is literally just across the room, she could so easily just enter through there, yet she doesn't.source ↗

It's been 3 years. She still meows at door 3 instead of using door 2 that is literally open all the time, just takes a few steps to the side.source ↗
