Why are my floor tiles cracking and tenting?
Cracked and tenting tiles are usually caused by installation flaws or concrete slab movement that places stress on the flooring. This forces homeowners into a frustrating cycle of constantly patching tiles or being forced to completely rip up and replace the entire floor.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Patching cracks using spare tile
- 2Replacing tile with Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP)
- 3Contacting a foundation or structural specialist to inspect the movement.
- 4Scraping out loose grout and replacing it with a similar colored grout
- 5Tapping tiles to check for a hollow sound to test bonding
- 6Taking out and redoing all the flooring
- 7Covering the crack with a bath mat or rug
- 8Filling the crack with matching grout to blend it in and stop it from spreading
- 9Breaking out the cracked tile and replacing it with an extra spare tile
- 10Scrubbing hard
- 11Using a white eraser
- 12Using Comet or Bar Keepers Friend
