How to handle students who blame you for bad grades

Students often expect an A simply for completing an assignment, involving their parents the minute they receive a lower score. Rather than admitting their arguments are weak or their work was treated as a joke, they will look for any excuse to blame the teacher, such as claiming personal or political bias. This leaves teachers dealing with relentless complaints instead of managing actual classroom behavior.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Tell parents to homeschool if they want to give their kids all As
  2. 2
Have extremely specific rubrics and guidelines
  3. 3
Offer clear feedback as time permits
  4. 4
    Ignore invalid complaints
  5. 5
Have students write by hand to avoid AI and plagiarism
  6. 6
    Explaining the grading rubric clearly
  7. 7
Showing students how to strengthen weak arguments and providing extensive feedback
  8. 8
Reminding students that they do not have to believe what they learn, but must understand the material
