Why do professionally installed custom window treatments and doors not fit?

Custom window treatments and doors often suffer from incorrect measurements, cutting errors, and ordering mistakes despite professional installation and multiple appointments. These sizing and communication failures leave homeowners dealing with improper fits and expensive replacement dilemmas.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
cutting losses and replacing the shades DIY using products from home improvement stores
  2. 2
    considering small claims court
  3. 3
Accepting the mistake, keeping the incorrectly configured door, and living with it
  4. 4
Asking the supplier for an at-cost replacement
  5. 5
Attempting to modify the non-operating side by adding hinges and an opener if it is a standard door fixed into the frame
  6. 6
Disputing responsibility with the supplier by arguing that the customer is not an expert and the salesperson should have verified and explained the specs

“I had several large roller shades and some smaller ones installed - they were generally not measured/cut correctly (despite it taking multiple appointments for them to do the measuring and multiple appointments to do the installing).”source ↗

“I'm curious on others opinions, we just had a set of Marvin french doors installed, when the company we ordered from came to measure, we asked to match the existing doors as closely as possible.”source ↗

“When they wrote the order for the door, they only wrote in one side being an opening door, and the other as a static, non functioning door. I missed this in the order, and it was never communicated aside from the order sheet that the order would be for a single sided operational door.”source ↗

“I recognize I signed the order on the wrong door, and I recognize they wrote the order for something that's non standard, and failed to advise/match the existing door as requested.”source ↗

“What's fair here? I'm considering asking for an at cost replacement, I'm also considering forgetting it and just leaving it. I know this is my mistake, but it's an expensive one (door plus installation was 7k), and I want others opinions for what's fair in these circumstances.”source ↗
