Is it worth fixing an AC leak or just keep adding freon?

When an AC evaporator coil freezes up from a refrigerant leak, homeowners face a gamble on whether paying for repairs is actually worth it. Instead of fixing it, many resort to repeatedly paying to refill the coolant, struggling to know if a replacement would ultimately be cheaper.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
testing joints with soapy water to find the leak
  2. 2
performing DIY repairs to avoid high labor costs
  3. 3
continually refilling the coolant reservoir when it gets low
