How much straw mulch is too much for grass seed?
Too much straw blocks sunlight and traps moisture, which stops grass seed from germinating evenly and can cause the seeds to rot. If you cannot see patches of bare soil peeking through the straw, or if the layer is deeper than a few strands thick, you need to gently rake up some of the excess.
