Where is the line between normal hygiene and OCD cleaning?

It is difficult to tell whether a cleaning reaction is a reasonable standard or an OCD compulsion because online advice gives completely opposite answers. This leaves people unable to trust their own judgment and leads to spending hours scrubbing with whatever supplies are available.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
asking online forums for outside opinions
  2. 2
challenging the compulsive thought and pushing through discomfort
  3. 3
cleaning the item anyway with wipes, sprays, or washing the cover
  4. 4
letting it slide without cleaning if there is no visual dirt
  5. 5
Using various cleaning supplies and scrubbing repeatedly for hours
