Said It Here

Why does my car run terribly and stutter after a long drive?

Extended driving triggers severe engine sluggishness, unusual valve train noises, and random cylinder misfire codes. These sudden performance drops cause RPM stuttering and electrical warnings that leave drivers stranded and unable to reach a diagnostic scanner.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
letting the car sit for a couple of hours before attempting to drive home
  2. 2
using a mechanic's stethoscope to pinpoint the source of the engine noise
  3. 3
erasing misfire codes to see if they return
  4. 4
Waiting until after work to get the vehicle scanned for trouble codes
  5. 5
    replacing VVT solenoids
  6. 6
    replacing timing chain and tensioners
  7. 7
    cleaning the throttle body
  8. 8
    watching a YouTube tutorial
  9. 9
    replacing the throttle body gasket
  10. 10
    performing a throttle relearning procedure
  11. 11
Checking engine mounts or replacing O2 sensors
  12. 12
Remove and inspect the distributor cap and rotor for rubbing
  13. 13
Check if the wrong parts were purchased
  14. 14
Verify if the rotor was over-tightened
  15. 15
Check and adjust ignition timing with a timing light
  16. 16
Replacing power steering pump O-rings, belts, belt tensioners, and alternators based on guesswork.
  17. 17
Avoiding returning to the dealership due to bad experiences
  18. 18
Replacing parts independently such as MAF sensors, spark plugs, wires, ignition coils, fuel filters, and fuel pumps
  19. 19
Taking the vehicle to multiple different repair shops
  20. 20
    Replacing the starter or alternator
  21. 21
    Changing the oil
  22. 22
Holding the throttle at 1000-1300 rpm for a minute to let it warm up before letting go
  23. 23
getting multiple opinions from different mechanics

Hi guys, I was wondering what this noise could be that comes and goes during stationary.source ↗

New iac in. On cold it idles high then dies. If I sit at 1000-1300rpm for a minute let it warm up, Then let go of throttle completely it idles almost perfectly normal for an extended amount of time. I do hear some strong hissing noise at the front end of the engine. I’ve replaced tons of vacuum lines.source ↗

What could be this whine? psp pump or alternatorsource ↗

I plan on taking it into a different shop next week. But I don’t know what to do from here if they can’t identify the issue like the previous mechanics.source ↗

Whenever I do a cold start, the engine makes a severe rattling/grinding noise that lasts for about 3 to 4 seconds.source ↗

Went for a long drive recently and after about 40 minutes the car started running horribly and the engine noise had gotten considerably worse. It was super sluggish.source ↗

Drove towards home and made it maybe 15 minutes down the road before it threw a misfire code for cylinder 2 and 6. The noise sounds like it’s coming from the drivers side valve cover but I can’t really tell.source ↗

It’s been making this sound on and off. It’s worse in the cold or so I thought but it’s starting to do it when it’s warm as well. It gets faster as a accelerate.source ↗

I feel like I’m driving a brick. Like when I put my foot on the gas it’s almost fighting to accelerate.source ↗

Sometimes when Im driving the car, it kinda jerks.source ↗

I’ve also noticed oil on the driveway. I have checked my oil but it seems to okay.source ↗

I just replaced the cam/crankshaft position sensors and now it sounds like this.source ↗

I brought it to the dealership and first they thought it was the transmission mount, which they replaced but the sound was still there. Then they replaced the whole engine thinking it was related to the engine recalls, the sound is still there.source ↗

I’ve had my car back for two days and I really don’t want to deal with the dealership again. It was a bad experience all around.source ↗

Hello mechanics, I noticed my car has been running a bit rough lately and there’s a noise that comes out when I rev it up to 2k rpm. The car has also gone into limp mode once.source ↗

my mums car has recently been shaking a lot when it comes to a complete stop or when it's in reverse.source ↗

Just changed the distributor cap and rotor on my 02 blazer with 285k and it started clicking after I started it. Almost sounds like a passing train.source ↗

I suppose it could be wrong. I guess there's a chance I over tightened the rotor as well.source ↗

I made sure to mark each and every piece before I removed anything and put everything bot together in the same orientation and never moved anything but i guess it could be off.source ↗

It’s frustrating to get a video because the noise is clear to my ears, but doesn’t sound the same and is sometimes hard to hear in a video.source ↗

The acceleration uphill is a challenge, and holding highway speeds uphill is a challenge.source ↗

I have a ford ka 2016, and lately my car has been struggling to accelerate. When I press on the peddle there’s a delay before the car starts to speed up. The car also makes a weird grinding noise.source ↗

I’ve taken it to 2 mechanics and they say it’s gearbox related?source ↗

The gearbox itself feels ok so I’m struggling to see how it’s relatedsource ↗

Aggressive-Cup3953 · r/MechanicAdvice · 1 upvotes

I had an old car that struggled in the same way.source ↗

Electronic throttle body makes weird noise. Also periodically the car goes into limp mode with throttle position error p2119. Should be replaced?source ↗
