How to stop invasive bamboo from spreading in my yard

Eradicating the plant may require building a heavy physical block like a concrete barrier, as typical yardwork cannot stop the underground runners. Cutting stalks to the ground or covering them with black plastic fails because the shoots simply grow back thicker and push the plastic up. Even digging a foot deep to pull up rhizomes leaves surviving runners that travel beneath fences and patios to sprout new shoots across the lawn weeks later.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
digging out the patch and rhizomes
  2. 2
cutting the stalks down to the ground
  3. 3
covering the area with black plastic
  4. 4
    Pulling new shoots each spring
  5. 5
Cutting back stems that lean into paths
  6. 6
Observing if new stems pop up several feet away to determine if it is a running or clumping variety
