Do I have to use a deadname on marriage paperwork?

Official marriage license paperwork often requires listing an officiant's or spouse's legal name rather than their chosen name or preferred name. This mismatch between legal identity and actual identity leaves couples worried about the legal validity of their marriage or causes administrative snags like delayed paychecks and denied certificates.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Putting the legal deadname on the paperwork while adding the chosen name in parentheses
  2. 2
Keeping the maiden name indefinitely and going by the partner's name unofficially
  3. 3
Changing the legal name midyear while continuing to use the old name with students until the following year
  4. 4
Submitting licensure and hiring paperwork under the anticipated new name ahead of time

“I’ve had my marriage certificate denied and they required a different one and then I missed the beginning of the year and didn’t get a job right away.”source ↗

“Well like I said it's a process. My husband was accidentally given two last names on his birth certificate instead of one. So on our marriage certificate it's two last names instead of one. In my state sometimes if you want to only take on last names from a hyphenated name it counts as a legal "new last name". It costs like $300 to do it, plus I have to appear infront of a judge, plus I'd have to announce in the newspaper I have a new last name. And our nearest social security office is two hours away. It's a long and lengthy process.”source ↗

“I'm currently in college for elementary education. I got married 2-ish years ago and just haven't had the time to change my name (mainly because my husband has two legal last names and I only want one name, so it's a whole process) . I was thinking of changing my name after graduating and getting my license but before my first year of teaching. When's the "ideal" time to change my name.”source ↗

“We did the marriage license earlier this week where the clerk told us to put our officiant's legal name, which is their deadname. We also put their chosen name in parentheses. My fiancee and I are worried that it may not be legal, even though the city hall clerk saw it and took it.”source ↗
