When should I stop watering my lawn for winter?

You should generally keep watering your lawn until a genuine cold snap arrives, though you can dial back the frequency to about once a week as seasonal temperatures drop. Continuing to water too long or stopping prematurely during unusually warm autumn weather makes it difficult to judge the grass's actual dormancy needs, leading to guesswork about moisture levels.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Waiting for the grass to reach about 3 to 4 inches tall before mowing
  2. 2
Dialing watering back to once a week
  3. 3
Continuing to water until a real cold snap occurs
  4. 4
Mowing grass at higher heights like 5 inches when temperatures near 100 degrees
  5. 5
mowing high the first time and slowly lowering mowing heights
  6. 6
backing off on water and watering less frequently to encourage deep root growth
  7. 7
Applying pre-emergent herbicide or withholding water to prevent growth
  8. 8
Mowing early at 2.5 inches and re-seeding bare spots
  9. 9
Applying spot seeding and top dressing after an early mow

Used this to over seed today here in NE Pennsylvania. States 6-8 days for germination. Google is telling my 2-4 weeks until my next mow. Any guidance from real life experience?source ↗
