What do you get a kid that they still use months later?

Kids frequently request toys they do not actually enjoy playing with, leaving items like Lego sets and dollhouses abandoned in bins or used as laundry storage within a week. This disconnect between what children ask for and what holds their interest leads parents to waste money on clutter instead of finding gifts that are used long-term.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Gifting experiences like zoo memberships, amusement park trips, or family adventure days
  2. 2
Buying outdoor gear like bikes, scooters, and roller skates that get daily physical use
  3. 3
Giving consumable craft supplies, bath bombs, or lotions that get used up instead of taking up space
  4. 4
Stopping the purchase of casual toys on normal days so birthdays feel genuinely special
  5. 5
Give easy reader books or themed storybooks.
  6. 6
Hand out decorated cookies that match the party theme.
  7. 7
Provide small consumable items like themed snacks, finger paints, or balloons.
