Why do baby boys pee on you during diaper changes?

Baby boys often projectile urinate unexpectedly when exposed to cool air during diaper changes, sometimes spraying significant distances onto parents, pets, or even themselves. This startling reflex catches sleep-deprived caregivers off guard, often ruining clean supplies and leading to chaotic cleanups.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Putting a wipe over him as soon as the diaper is opened
  2. 2
Using cone-shaped covers or tents designed for diaper changes
  3. 3
Swiping a cold wipe on the lower abdomen before opening the diaper to trigger urination beforehand

If it helps, the first time it happened to me I was so flummoxed I dropped the clean nappy to try and catch it in my cupped hands. No idea why except I was sleep deprived and I think in the haze thought it would help with cleaning up.source ↗
