Do I have to pay my dead parent's credit card debt?

When a relative dies with little to no assets and unpaid debts, family members often receive collection letters while being unsure if they are personally responsible for the balance or need to open an estate. Creditors may try to collect from accounts where someone was an authorized user, or pressure families regarding debts that exceed the deceased person's estate assets.
