What kind of roaches are these?

Telling a German from an Asian cockroach, or identifying fast black roaches, is difficult when the bugs do not match standard descriptions. The process gets especially confusing when behavior contradicts expected traits, such as a supposedly slow and sluggish Oriental roach moving like lightning.
