How to identify an old AC unit without a model tag
Weathered labels and missing manufacturer data tags make it impossible to read model numbers or determine the age and specifications of an air conditioner. This leaves people unable to look up the correct replacement parts or figure out how old the unit is.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Searching inside the panel or controls cover
- 2Looking up the compressor model number to find compatible parts
- 3Cleaning around and digging up a partially buried unit to locate hidden tags
- 4Using a sharpie on a finger and rubbing it over the model plate to reveal faded text
- 5Checking for a second sticker on the inside of the electrical compartment door
