Why outdoor cats keep losing their collars
Outdoor cats frequently lose breakaway and safety collars because they roam and slip out of them while climbing trees, fences, and navigating tight spaces. For owners outside the United States where microchip scanners are unavailable, this lack of a reliable collar makes it difficult to keep track of wandering pets.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Buying multiple replacement breakaway or elastic collars
- 2Using harnesses and vests instead of or alongside collars
- 3letting the cat roam outside without a tracker
- 4trying cat safety collars that end up getting lost

“I wish I could get my cat to wear a collar. I've spent so much money on breakaway collars and elastic collars hoping that one of them will stay on him. He's an outdoor cat so I can't put a regular collar on him, he might get into trouble.”source ↗
“I bought her collars but she keeps losing them since they are cat safety and she likes to roam around everywhere . Fences ,trees, vans, etc.”source ↗
