Are retirement account transfer bonuses actually worth it?

Chasing a percentage deposit match by moving money between brokerages often backfires because transfer fees can wipe out the small cash bonus on smaller balances. Long holding requirements, hidden fees, and poorer investment options can also trap funds or erode any short-term gains.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Keeping funds in the original brokerage account to avoid transfer and exit fees
  2. 2
Looking into other brokerages or introductory promotions like Webull
  3. 3
Researching low-balance banking bonuses and offers on specialized websites like Doctor of Credit
  4. 4
reading the terms and holding funds on the platform for the required duration
  5. 5
using traditional standard brokerages like Vanguard instead

“People see the percentages being similar to 401k matching percentages and equate them; they are absolutely not the same. $40 on a $7500 contribution could easily be eaten up by higher expense ratios or poorer investment options compared to the more standard brokerages.”source ↗
