Dishwasher has a funky smell but looks visually clean

A musty odor builds up when the door is left closed for a while, even when everything inside visually looks fine. Running multiple cleaning cycles or using bleach fails to permanently eliminate the issue because the smell keeps coming back. You cannot simply leave the doors open to air it out because they end up getting in the way.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
    Checking and cleaning the filter
  2. 2
Running an empty cycle with vinegar
  3. 3
Pulling out the bottom rack to check for hidden gunk
  4. 4
Wiping down the rubber seal regularly
  5. 5
Leaving the door cracked open after cycles to let it air out
  6. 6
Leaving the washer door open after every use so internal water can evaporate
  7. 7
Running dummy cleaning cycles with bleach
  8. 8
Using moisture absorbers in the laundry space
  9. 9
Switching to powder detergent and stopping the use of liquid fabric softener
  10. 10
Disassembling the drum and housing to pressure wash it
  11. 11
Stopping use of the machines completely
