Why is there oil in the spark plug wells?

Oil leaking down into engine cylinders and spark plug wells leaves drivers unsure whether they can simply replace a seal gasket or if they are facing internal engine trouble. This uncertainty leaves them questioning the correct repair path for their vehicle.
