How to open a door when the latch is stuck and won't retract
When a door handle mechanism breaks and fails to retract the latch, the door remains shut and blocks physical access to the internal hardware for removal. Even using pliers, screwdrivers, or cards often fails to release the stuck mechanism, leaving people completely locked out.

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Using needlenose pliers or a flathead screwdriver to pull the internal plunger
- 2Working between the door and jamb with a thin flat screwdriver or putty knife to push the latch back
- 3Taking the door off the hinge
