How to plan a front yard layout with sandy soil

Planning a layout for a yard with sandy soil leaves many people stuck on what to do with the space when they want to avoid grass. Without a clear design, it is difficult to figure out how to arrange elements like walkways, seating areas, and plant beds to make the most of the area.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Watering more often to improve hydration in sandy soil
  2. 2
Waiting and living in the home for a while before making permanent decisions
  3. 3
Designing a patio on an angle or diamond shape instead of straight layouts
  4. 4
Using raised beds along the sides with a central walkway

“I just don’t really know what to do with the space… I don’t want grass... It is clay ground (the Netherlands) so I have to mix other dirt in. What would be some recommendations for plants, layout, optimal use of space?”source ↗

“Don't go for a straight garden. At least not square. Go for a patio on an angle. Diamond shape.”source ↗
