How to prep a weed and mulch area for laying sod

Conflicting advice makes it difficult to figure out the right steps to clear the area and prepare the soil before laying sod. This uncertainty stops people from knowing how to properly handle stubborn debris like small rocks and weeds so the lawn can be successfully established.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Renting a sod cutter to strip the top layer
  2. 2
    Tilling everything under
  3. 3
Putting down a weed barrier with new soil on top
  4. 4
    Raking and clearing without tilling
  5. 5
Using a metal rake and physical labor
  6. 6
Renting a rock hound to loosen soil and filter out rocks
  7. 7
Ignoring the gravel and getting loam or top soil delivered instead

I noticed there is a lot of small rocks in the dirt and was wondering what would be a good tool to remove them so that I can seed.source ↗
