How to stop weed whacking from staining a new fence

Mowing and weed whacking right against a fence leaves green organic stains along the bottom over time. Creating a barrier or changing the landscaping along the fence line prevents grass from growing up against it and eliminates the need for close trimming.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Adding mulch and plants down along the fence
  2. 2
Using raised beds to make the fenceline look neater

Should I just let our grass fill in the topsoil up against the fence or what do you recommend I do?source ↗

If you let the grass grow up along it and then weed whack it over time its going to stain along the bottom of the fence.source ↗
