Pulling off the substrate when removing window caulk

When trying to peel away separating window caulk, the material can tear off a dark substrate layer underneath instead of coming clean. Leftover residue and clear glue often remain even after heating with a hairdryer, requiring careful scraping with a blade or plastic scraper using rubbing alcohol.

“I went to pull of a piece of caulk from the window that was separating and ended up pulling off some sort of dark substrate underneath as well.”source ↗

“I heated it first with a hairdryer but still had loads of left over residue. I’ve sat heating it, wetting, it gently scraping it and got some off but still so much left behind including completely clear glue residue.”source ↗

“I’d start with the least expensive, low stakes option: rubbing alcohol. Saturate a paper towel, hold against the window for a bit, then scrape (razor blade or plastic scraper). New paper towel, repeat on the next section.”source ↗
