How do I reconnect a disconnected HVAC duct?

HVAC and appliance exhaust ducts can come loose due to renovations, vibrations, or wear, leading to air leaking into living spaces instead of venting outside. Reconnecting them requires securing the pipe alignment and sealing the joints properly to ensure the system functions efficiently and safely.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Leaving the ventilation unit turned off
  2. 2
Searching online for information about heat recovery ventilators
  3. 3
Removing part of the upper panel in the cabinet with an oscillating tool
  4. 4
Using a USB c probe camera to inspect inside the crack
  5. 5
Sealing the seams of the pipe with paper-backed tape

We had to get a new microwave, and after removing the old one we’re pretty sure the connection to the outside exhaust vent came undone.source ↗

Hello ! I just noticed that there is a duct going from my furnace, blowing air into my air echanger.source ↗

The thing is that the pipe isnt connected to it right now, i assumed it got loose and isnt in its place anymore.source ↗

Im wondering if its normal for that pipe to be connected there, especially since my air exhanger is off most of the time.source ↗

I can’t access the rest of the pipe that is up past the hole though. Which is why I’m wondering if just removing that panel with the hole in it is the only option.source ↗

When connecting the pipe to the new microwave, I noticed it was moving around too much, and when we tested the new microwave’s exhaust, I could feel air coming into the cabinet through the gap between the hole and the pipe.source ↗
