How to remove a t-post that is flush with the ground?

Standard lever extractors require two to four feet of exposed post to attach, which makes them useless when a t-post is broken or driven nearly flush with the dirt. With only inches showing and no leverage or hand space available, standard pulling methods fail completely.

What the numbers show

Counted from the threads quoted below. How we count

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Soaking the ground with water and using a heavy-duty chain with a long rigid pipe and a wood block as a fulcrum
  2. 2
Driving the post further into the ground instead of removing it
  3. 3
Digging a hole around the post with a shovel or post hole digger to expose enough length to grab
  4. 4
Knocking the post down further into the ground instead of removing it
  5. 5
Using a chain hoist or pulley system with a tripod/teepee structure
  6. 6
Using a post driver as a wedge and leverage point to pull the post back
  7. 7
    Using a hose and shovel
  8. 8
Slamming it further down into the ground
  9. 9
Asking a local farmer for help
  10. 10
Using wire cutters or wire snips to cut the wires at ground level
  11. 11
Knocking the stakes with a hammer to loosen them
  12. 12
Digging around the stakes or anchors in the ground to pull them out
  13. 13
Hiring a landscape company to remove them

“I want to get a t-post I have attached to a tree out of the ground. I searched youtube & Google and see all the videos and tools, but in EVERY single example and instruction, the t-post is 2-4 FEET out of ground where you can apply a lever or extractor. My t-post is about 4 INCHES max out of the ground, you can barely even see it. Any advice with this?”source ↗
