How do I remove just one tile from a fireplace surround?

Removing a single fireplace tile without damaging the surrounding structure requires careful scoring and chipping away at the target piece. This allows you to inspect what is underneath or modify the layout without having to tear out the entire surround.

I’m looking for suggestions on how to remove, say, 1 tile without destroying everything to see what I have underneath and see if it’s worth trying to recover.source ↗

My kitchen has this cool pocket door but it’s blocked by the tile. How does one go about cutting the tile back about an inch so it’s not in the way of the door?source ↗
