How to fix a torn garage door bracket

The mounting point on the door shell has torn away from the opener bracket, causing the motor to jerk violently and stopping the door from opening. Simply reattaching the bracket or moving it to a different spot on the damaged shell fails because the thin metal cannot support the operating tension without reinforcing support.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Moving the mounting bracket lower down on an intact part of the door panel and readjusting the closing tension
  2. 2
Mounting the broken piece to a steel plate and screwing the plate into the door around its perimeter
  3. 3
Installing an angle iron across the full length of the door to reinforce weak panels
  4. 4
    leaving play in the joint
  5. 5
    adding a lock nut
  6. 6
using a pin with a spring clip or cotter pin
  7. 7
    Scraping and sanding
  8. 8
    Replacing hinges and rollers
  9. 9
    Fixing the rails
  10. 10
Adding a rubber gasket to stop water coming in from the bottom
  11. 11
Waiting until it breaks and replacing it entirely

My garage door suddenly stopped opening yesterday, and it looks like this is the cause. I can’t reattach it in the same place with the door shell tearing like that, and I tried attaching it lower where the shell was intact and then adjusting the trolly arm, but that didn’t work.source ↗

I’m just not sure why to do other than scrape + sand.source ↗

Should this bolt be tight on my garage door? this is how the motor attaches to the door. It’s jerking around a bit as the door opens.source ↗
