How to touch up dark matte paint without it showing

Dark matte paint burnishes easily and dries differently when patched, leaving shiny or textured flash marks around the repaired spot. This makes small dings turn into highly visible patches that often force you to repaint the entire wall from corner to corner.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Painting the whole wall if touch ups are too noticeable
  2. 2
Using a small roller with the same nap
  3. 3
Feathering the edges out with a small brush in thin coats
  4. 4
Using a soft cloth and baking soda
  5. 5
    Using just water
  6. 6
Using Zep wall spray with a microfiber cloth wrapped around a Swiffer
  7. 7
Using water with a little liquid dish soap in a spray bottle

Flat paint on some walls and matte on others. Handprints and scuffs everywhere.source ↗

For the flat paint walls - Magic erasers make the wall disintegrate.source ↗

For the matte walls - Magic erasers work well but it’s so time consuming.source ↗

If it's too noticeable after it dries, you might need to paint the whole wall with the dings.source ↗
