Will digging a trench kill my mature trees?
Trenching near 80-to-100-foot mature trees raises major concerns about damaging critical root structures and killing the trees. People facing this situation worry there is no safe distance to dig without causing fatal harm, leaving them unsure whether they can proceed or need to find another route.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1dig by hand and leave bigger roots intact
- 2Using geotextile fabric over roots with an aggregate layer before paving
- 3Building a raised boardwalk
- 4Using decomposed granite

“My concern is the roots, I just don’t think there is any safe distance without damaging them. There are three large mature trees each probably like 80-100 feet tall that are healthy (two maples and a cherry).”source ↗
“Could anyone tell me if I can safely trench past the trees or should I not go this route?”source ↗
“I like that idea however I an worried about the roots and killing the tree with concrete option. How do you deal with the roots when considering the thickness of the concrete and subbase? Do you think the trees will make it?”source ↗
