How do credit card interest and statement balances work?
Confusing terminology makes it hard to know if interest is applied to the balance on the due date or the statement close date. This uncertainty leaves people guessing whether an immediate payment will stop their minimum payment from increasing, and what happens to previously accrued balances once they finally pay the card down to zero.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Trying to pay down chunks of the balance each month
- 2Using online calculators to estimate payoff timelines and interest
- 3paying as much as possible immediately rather than waiting for dates
- 4asking for clarification on financial forums
