Why did my retirement account balance drop over the years?

Retirement accounts can experience significant losses or empty to zero due to prolonged poor performance in conservative funds, high hidden fees eroding the principal over a decade, or mandatory account closures and conversions like escheatment from previous employers. These unexpected drops leave people wondering where their money went and whether such severe declines are normal.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Checking historical statements and fund ticker performance
  2. 2
Calling the financial institution or provider customer support to investigate account history
  3. 3
Reviewing statements line by line to look for hidden fees, distributions, or uninvested cash
  4. 4
Contacting the previous employer's HR department for information
  5. 5
Calling the previous financial custodian and tracking down the new provider
  6. 6
Checking state unclaimed property databases and missingmoney.com
  7. 7
Searching through old email and junk folders for missed notifications
  8. 8
Zooming out to view historical multi-year or 10-year market performance charts
  9. 9
Ignoring daily balance fluctuations and holding long-term investments
  10. 10
Adding international stocks to diversify the portfolio

So this happened to me last year, I had an account with T. Rowe Price through a previous employer, it had been more than 10 years. I logged in one day to find that my account had 0 dollars in it.source ↗

My mother put about $60k into a John Hancock “lifestyle conservative” retirement fund around 2014 and hasn’t touched it since. I just started helping her look at her finances and saw that it’s now worth about $39k.source ↗

Losing that much over 12 years feels wrong, but maybe I’m misunderstanding something.source ↗

Is this kind of performance actually normal for a conservative retirement fund? What could cause something like this?source ↗

I logged into an old 401k from a previous employer which had a significant amount of money in it. I was surprised to find that the balance at zero...the funds had been "converted."source ↗

I was given no notice about this, and I cannot find out where this money went.source ↗

Newer to investing, started a Roth IRA the second half of this year. Maxed it out, all VOO mid August. Ever since then, the account has barely grown. It is actually down $30 overall today. What’s going on?source ↗
