Why can't accountants open Apple Numbers files?

Proprietary spreadsheet software like Apple Numbers generates file formats that standard industry professionals cannot open without conversion. This incompatibility creates constant friction when sharing files with clients and forces collaborators to repeatedly request standard exports.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using Excel on a Mac or Windows desktop
  2. 2
Exporting Numbers files to Excel format before sharing
  3. 3
    Using Google Sheets instead

If I get a Numbers file from anyone, I tell them to send it as an Excel file.source ↗

As an accountant, please use Excel. I will ask you everytime to save as an excel file as I can't open your .numbers.source ↗

I'm starting a bookkeeping course, and strongly prefer Mac programs. I find them much more functional and intuitive.source ↗
