Why does my truck stall and die when shifting into reverse?

Vehicles can stall immediately upon shifting into reverse or drive, accompanied by severe jerking and high idling speeds. This persistent issue can happen even with a brand new transmission installed, preventing the vehicle from operating normally when changing gears.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Spraying starting fluid or brake cleaner around the intake area to identify potential vacuum leaks

Has troubling starting but when it starts it’ll idle a little higher than normal, around 1100 to 1200 rpm. But when put in drive it’ll start to sputter and will die or start acting like it will when given gas.source ↗
