How to stop a large reactive dog from pulling on the leash?
Large reactive dogs pull heavily toward other dogs and ignore commands once outside, which can cause owners to fall and injure themselves. Even with consistent training and wearing a harness, the pulling can worsen to the point where the dog struggles to breathe.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Putting oneself between the dog and other dogs
- 2Moving the dog to the opposite side
- 3Turning around or trying to redirect the dog
- 4Using high-value treats and training cues to distract the dog
- 5Using treats to reinforce a loose heel in the home or garden
- 6Pivoting by saying 'this way!' and walking in the opposite direction
- 7Freezing and stopping completely still until the dog stops pulling
- 8Taking the dog on exposure walks to sit at the edge of a parking lot to watch people and dogs
