Why do white mesh shoes turn yellow after washing?

Yellow or oily stains appear on white mesh sneakers as they dry because trapped laundry detergent residues react with air or water minerals. This chemical reaction leaves shoes looking worse after a wash, causing many people to give up on cleaning them entirely.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using a wet tissue layering technique while drying shoes slowly in the shade
  2. 2
Hot water and oxy clean soak overnight followed by a gentle wash
  3. 3
Washing in the washing machine on a delicate cycle using a mesh bag and stain tightener
