How to clean HVAC coils when line sets block the panel
Line sets and insulation block removable panels, leaving homeowners unable to reach the coils without cutting custom access holes into the unit. People are forced to make these modifications just to wash down the system and keep it from staying frozen.
What people tried
Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.
- 1Call for an HVAC tech to do it…
- 2Cutting custom access panels into the unit housing or ductwork using oscillating tools and cut-off wheels to wash down the coil.

“I had one of these, I cut access panels into both sides and washed everything down to the drain. It’s kind of a hack move, but it was that or stay frozen.”source ↗
“The only way I see gaining access is that panel someone cut but you can’t really remove it enough with the line set going through and the insulation”source ↗
“I wish these were designed better but they aren’t… and something needs to be done here.”source ↗
