Why does my cat only drink fresh water from the bowl?

Cats reject standing water because it quickly collects dust, film, or stale odors that trigger their natural survival instincts against contamination. This forces owners to constantly wash bowls and refill them multiple times a day just to keep their cats hydrated.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
washing the bowl and refilling it with fresh water multiple times a day
  2. 2
moving the water bowl away from the food bowl
  3. 3
    using a larger bowl
  4. 4
providing running water or a fountain
  5. 5
    Closing the toilet lid
  6. 6
    Buying a filtered water fountain
  7. 7
Moving the water source farther away from the food bowl
  8. 8
Switching to a ceramic water bowl and changing the water more often
  9. 9
    Buying pet water fountains
  10. 10
Lifting the cat up to the sink and turning the faucet on 3 to 5 times a day
  11. 11
leaving the water bowl next to the food bowl
  12. 12
    getting a pet water fountain
  13. 13
    adding water to wet food

I noticed that he coming to his bowl, sniffing water and then leaving. He drinks only if I will wash the bowl and fill it with freshwater. He will drink once and wouldn’t touch it again.source ↗

I can’t change Water for him 5-6 times a day, or we will simply go bankrupt.🤣source ↗

He clearly wants to drink. Because he come in there and sniff in the water, but then just turn away.source ↗

My cat will only drink water from the tap. I've ordered him a fountain in hopes I can turn my bathroom faucet off. 😄 Weirdos.source ↗

I now have to pick her up and open the tap 3-5 times a day or she just screams at me. Lesson learned 😂source ↗

The consequences of having one of the many cats that barely touch water are not so fun (and frequently manifest in vet trips).source ↗
