Why does my cat scratch furniture instead of her scratching posts?

Cats often bypass designated posts and cat trees because they prefer specific fabric textures, such as household upholstery, towels, and blankets, over the rope materials provided. This leaves owners with damaged furniture and feeling like their training efforts are completely ignored.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
buying scratching posts and cat trees
  2. 2
    Trying cardboard scratching pads
  3. 3
Putting catnip or catnip spray on the scratching posts
  4. 4
Placing scratching posts directly in front of items the cat scratches
  5. 5
Using a light misting bottle to discourage scratching unauthorized areas
  6. 6
Physically moving the cat to the scratching post and using positive reinforcement with praise when used correctly

I have scratching posts and cat trees with parts for scratching. Both my cats choose the scratch the fabric and not the rope part...source ↗
