Should I apply fall fertilizer to a new lawn before winter?

Applying a fall fertilizer helps establish roots and greens up pale grass, but knowing whether it is needed after an initial starter application leaves many unsure. When they decide to proceed, they often do not know the correct application rate and struggle to find straight granular options without weed control locally before the weather cools.
