How do I clean out my dryer vent?

Dryer vents accumulate massive amounts of hidden lint that can easily cause a dangerous fire if left uncleaned. Most people are completely unaware the pipe needs periodic maintenance until a close call or neighborly intervention forces them to spend hours scrubbing out the hose.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using a dryer vent hose cleaning kit
  2. 2
Taking apart the back of the dryer to clear internal lint
  3. 3
Using a leaf blower from the outside to blow out debris
  4. 4
    using a dryer periscope
  5. 5
using a MagVent for easier connection
  6. 6
using metal duct elbows and a straight connector
  7. 7
Pulling the hood off and hooking up to the pipe coming through the floor.
  8. 8
trying to pry it loose with a utility knife
  9. 9
accessing the vent from the basement
  10. 10
using a wire hanger hooked behind the slats to pull it out
  11. 11
    Vacuuming with a brush attachment
  12. 12
    Replacing filters

Just moved into a new house and this is the dryer vent duct that was left. The housing is bent out of shape but if I start to remove it it’s connected on the inside so it’s difficult to replace. What are the part I would need to make this current set up work?source ↗

Any tips for removing this flush mount vent cover or otherwise cleaning out this vent after the dog got sick?source ↗

I’ve started trying to work a utility knife around the edge but this cover is in there tight.source ↗

I tried accessing the vent from the basement but it’s behind another larger vent, partially tucked into a space above the basement wall where I can’t reach, wrapped in insulated foil and partially obstructed by spray foam.source ↗

I used a wire hanger hooked behind the slats on both sides to try and just pull it out. It did not work.source ↗

I noticed the dryer vent hose was unnecessarily long when it was installed, so I tried trimming it myself, but I don’t know if I made it any better. It looks like it’s kinked, and might trap lint.source ↗
