How to set shipping rates without weighing every product variant

Merchants must rely on complex tagging systems or broad stock categorization because manually adding weights and sizes to thousands of individual colors and styles is impossible. When shipping profiles aren't properly assigned to every single variant, the checkout system either charges unreasonable delivery fees for tiny items or falsely tells customers the product is out of stock.

What people tried

Every workaround mentioned in the threads below. We haven’t tested any of them — and nobody here is claiming they worked.

  1. 1
Using a complex product tagging system to determine rates
  2. 2
Shipping items via an office franking machine using non-tracked postal services
  3. 3
Manually testing the checkout process on a few random products to see if errors appear.

“The rate is decided via complex tagging system. There is no way to add weights and sizes to all of our products individually, we have too many variants for this.”source ↗

“We just want to cover the cost of shipping, we are not in it to make a profit on any shipping but I also don't want to have to charge someone £5 to send a £1.00 woven badge.”source ↗

“Customers are saying the product is "out of stock", but when I look at inventory its fine so I'm not sure where they are seeing this.”source ↗

“I'm curious if each single size and color/style needs to have the shipping profile associated with it. I do see some variants have it and some not.”source ↗
